Quality…Hopes…Dreams

Quality…Hopes…Dreams

This week with Eugenia, we talked about quality in public early childhood facilities. Eugenia shares that quality is not something that is discussed, observed or worried about in these facilities. The hardest part of education is finding teachers willing to teach. Like I had wrote about before, these groups can have over 30 children in one class. Having a teacher there to care for these children is their top priority.

Since most of these facilities are government funded, there is barely enough money to have the appropriate resources for the teacher, let alone money for professional development. They might have in-service meetings with the principal or someone who volunteers their time to come and talk to the teachers about a specific topic or issue. Professional development depends mostly (if not entirely) on the teacher.

Eugenia shares that her professional goals are to also get her masters and try and share her experiences and ideas at a university level. I shared with her that that seemed like something I would like to do one day as well. Eugenia’s dad lives with her and a lot of her time is spent taking care of her 97 year old aunt as well. Although she would love to continue her education right now, she doesn’t have the time between taking care of her father and her aunt or the financial support to start something like that as well.

Eugenia hopes that she can continue to inspire her little angels as well as insipire bigger ones later down the line. She also hopes that the educational aspect of Colombia will one day get better and make for a better tomorrow.

  1. It seems as though you and Eugenia had an engaging and wonderful conversation. She shared with you such personal but encouraging information. I’m sorry to hear that she has to put her education on hold for a while, but I think tending to her family is more important. I almost had the same thing happen to me when my mother was sick, but thankfully, she was better and I was able to finish with my bachelor’s degree. Very inspiring. Thanks
