FCAT, SAT, MAP, ACT, GRADE…the list can go on forever. As we look at standardized tests, there are many pros and cons about this form of testing.  Some advantages can be if we consider that this form of testing shows no human subjectivity or bias. These tests are set for everyone and are non-discriminatory towards any race, gender, or ability. When it comes to grading these tests as well, there are no in between answers, there are only right and wrong answers.

Just like there are advantages to these tests, I think there are a lot of disadvantages as well. When we think of testing a child to see what knowledge they have acquired, I don’t believe one (or multiple) multiple-choice test can fully capture the full result of what they know. Just like standardized tests are not bias they are also not valid for second language learners, students with disabilities, or students of other cultures. I remember that on a test one of the questions asked about a type of breakfast food. Although we might think that is such an easy question, if you are not American, or maybe even if you are, a ‘typical’ breakfast may vary from home to home. Some children eat cereal just like others might have fruit, arepas, tamales, omelets, or pastries. So just like there can be advantages there are disadvantages to these kinds of tests.

I believe that testing should include a variety of learning styles. Children should be tested in all areas such as oral, short answer, hands-on-activities, multiple choices, case scenario, presentation, and so many more. Through all of these various types of assessment, children can show what they know through the medium that they learn best through.

In Colombia, during recent years, there have been more standardized tests then before. Students now begin standardized tests in the 3rd grade. They are given a type of SAT test called Pruebas SABER.  Also, there are a lot of tests that are given in South America to compare educational levels. Some tests include Estudio Internacional de Progreso en Comprension Lectora (PIRLS) started in 4th grade, Segundo Estudio Regional Comparativo y Explicativo (SERCE) for 3rd grade, and Primer Estudio Internacional Comparativo for 3rd and 4th grade. There are no tests besides the ones given by the school and teachers that are like standardized tests.
